The geographic region of Vietnam has gone through several divisions dating back to the 16th century. The wars between Mac and Le dynasties (1541 – 92) resulted in the first recorded division of Vietnam. The Trinh – Nguyen war (1627 – 73), saw it getting divided between the two war-lords. This was followed by the Tay Son war (1770 – 1802).

Later when the French colonised Vietnam, they divided it into three parts. From 1954 to 1975, it was divided into two nations. It was only in 1975, that they united to form the current nation of Vietnam.
