Given : DJ LeMahieu of the Colorado Rockies had the highest batting average in the 2016 Major League Baseball season.

His  average was .348

So assume the probability of getting a hit is .348 for each time he batted. In a particular game,

he batted three times

To Find : a. This is an example of what type of probability?

b. What is the probability of getting three hits in a particular game?

c. What is the probability of not getting any hits in a game?

d. What is the probability of getting at least one hit?

Solution:

This is an example of   Normal Distribution

probability of hitting p = 0.348

probability of not hitting q =  1 - p = 1 - 0.348  = 0.652

P(x) = ⁿCₓpˣqⁿ⁻ˣ

n = 3

probability of getting three hits in a particular game  = P(3)

=  ³C₃(0.348)³(0.652)³⁻³

= (0.348)³

= 0.04214

probability of not getting any hits in a game

P(0)

= ³C₀(0.348)⁰(0.652)³⁻⁰

=  0.2772

probability of getting at least one hit

= 1 - P(0)

= 0.7228

Answer:

a. Empirical probability

b. .042

c. .277

d. .723

Step-by-step explanation:

b. (.348^3) = .042

c. (1 - .348) = .652^3 = .277

d. 1 - .277 = .723
