gametes are formed by the process of meiosis in which only half (haploid) the genetic material is transferred to gamete . when the two gametes with half the no of chromosomes(23) fuse they restore the normal no (46).

during the sexual reproduction , the female gamets or egg cell fuses with the male gamets or sperm which are haploid to form zygote. zygot is diploid which contains only 23 chromosomes in egg. it is the fusion of sperm ans egg which lead to offspring with 46 cromosomes
