During the cell division, the DNA present in the nucleus of the cell is replicated to ensure that the daughter cell receives an equal amount of DNA with respect to the parent DNA. However, in meiosis, the number of chromosomes in the nucleus is halved. The replication of DNA occurs during the S-phase of the Interphase.

In a cell, DNA replication begins at specific locations, or origins of replication, in the genome. Unwinding of DNA at the origin and synthesis of new strands, accommodated by an enzyme known as helicase, results in replication forks growing bi-directionally from the origin.

DNA replication needs to occur because existing cells divide to produce new cells. Each cell needs a full instruction manual to operate properly. So the DNA needs to be copied before cell division so that each new cell receives a full set of instructions.

During Mitosis, DNA is replicated during the S phase (Synthesis phase) of Interphase. Interphase is basically the daily life cycle of the cell. Cells spend most of their life in Interphase before Mitosis

DNA replication occurs in the cytoplasm of prokaryotes and in the nucleus of eukaryotes. Regardless of where DNA replication occurs, the basic process is the same.

DNA replication is the process by which DNA makes a copy of itself during cell division. ... The separation of the two single strands of DNA creates a 'Y' shape called a replication 'fork'. The two separated strands will act as templates for making the new strands of DNA..
