The S and G2 phases of interphase are followed by prophase which is the first stage of mitosis. The new DNA molecules generated are not distinct but intertwined in the S and G2 phases.

  • DNA molecules as shown in images are little distinguishable packets. We need to keep in mind that these images are for referencing and understanding rather than for literal representation.
  • DNA molecules, are bunch of interwoven strands of genetic thread held or linked in certain bundles.
  • These strands usually contain very important genetic material which influence multiple outcomes - somatic and genetic.
  • Thus it is easier if the genetic material is intertwined rather than distinct.
