Elongation. DNA polymerase has 5′–3′ activity. All known DNA replicationsystems require a free 3' hydroxyl group before synthesis can be initiated (note: the DNA template is read in 3′ to 5′ direction whereas a new strand is synthesized in the5′ to 3′ direction—this is often confused).

DNA Replication➫ The process by which DNA makes a copy of itself during cell division.

❱ DNA Replication begins at specific places in the genome called origins.

❱ The enzyme in charge of this is called a helicase because it unwinds the helix.

❱ The point where the double helix is opened up and the DNA is copied is called a Replication fork.

❱ DNA replication need to occur because existing cells divide to produce new cells.

❱ Each cell need a full instruction manual to operate properly.

❱ DNA needs to be copied before cell division so that each new cell receives a full set of instructions.

❱ DNA Replication Steps are:-

♦ The Separation of DNA Strands.

♦ Replication Fork Formation.

♦ Binding of Bases to Each Strand.

♦ The Termination of the Replication Process.
