In a given molecule of CrCl3 , the total no. of atoms occupying lattice position = 3 ( since there are three cl- in one molecule )
Therefore number of octahedral voids generated = 3 ( because total no. of o.v. = no. of lattice points in a crystal lattice)
While there is only one atom of Cr to occupy any one of these three voids generated ( in one molecule).
Hence, Fraction of octahedral voids occupied = 1/3
In addition there are 6 tetrahedral voids within the same molecule ( because total no. of t.v = twice the no. of lattice points in a crystal lattice )
so, total no. of voids = 6+ 3 = 9
But again there exist only one Cr3+ in one molecule .... therefore, the fraction of total voids occupied = 1/9.
that's the answer hope it helps you
