Chapters ‘The Portrait of a Lady’ and poem ‘Photograph’ both deal with the theme of nostalgia or recollections about the deceased family members. In the former chapter, Kushwant Singh pays a glowing tribute to his grandmother by remembering and describing some important incidents of her life.  

In the latter chapter, Shirley Toulson remembers her deceased mother by looking at her childhood photograph.  

Both the chapters end with the sadness associated with the death of beloved ones.
