Valency is the number of electrons required or should be given to obtain stable octet structure.

So Metals has positive and nonmetals has negative valency.

Till today the line is correct.May be in future it can not be true.

Thanks.

heya!
here's your answer!

_____________
_____

➡ to every extent your statement is true

➡ so practically ,
valency is the combining capacity of an atom with other atoms

➡ all non-metals have negative valency

but why?
⚪it is because all non metals have 4+ valence electrons in its outermost orbit
⚫to complete octet , the atoms need 4,3,2,1 electrons
⚪ therefore , when anyone gains electrons it gets negative valency

➡all metals have positive valency

but why?
⚪it is because all metals have 1,2,3 valence electrons in its outermost orbit
⚫to complete octet , the atoms donate 1,2,3, electrons
⚪ therefore , when anyone donates electrons it gets positive valency

➡ hence it's true that non metals hold negative and metals hold positive valency:)
