one reason for the French Revolution was the prevailing feudal system. 18th century French society was divided into 3 estates. The first estate was the clergy, second estate the nobels nd the 3rd estate was everybody else. The first and second estate owned most of the land and also didn't pay taxes.

In order to pass the proposal to raise taxes LouisXVl called an assembly of Estates General. Peasants and labours were not allowed in that assembly. Howerver about 40000 letters regarding their grievances were carried by represtatives of third estate.
