Given : An elevator descends into a mine shaft at the rate of 5m/min.

the descent starts from 8m above the ground level,

To Find : how long will it take to reach 42  m.( means -42 )below the ground level.

Solution:

descent starts from 8m above the ground level,

Hence from + 8

Reaches  upto 42 m below the ground

Hence -42 m

Distance covered = | -42 - 8 |

= | - 50|

= 50 m

Speed = 5 m/m

Distance = Speed * time

=> 50 = 5 * time

=> time = 10 sec

elevator will take 10 secs
