Conjunctions are joining words. (Words that join two sentences)
Eg. You should study. You will fail.
You will fail unless you study.
There are three types of conjunctions:
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
- They join the same types of grammatical units like noun with noun, adjective with adjective, clause with clause etc.
- They are used to form compound sentences
- I like both purple and blue.
- You can remember some of the coordinating conjunctions with FANBOYS - for, and, nor/neither, but, or/either, yet, so.
2. Subordinating Conjunctions
- They join sentences in which the second part of the sentence is dependent upon the first one.
- They are used to form complex sentences.
- Although I was excited, I kept my clam.
- Eg. Though/Although, till/until, before/after, because, whether/if, than etc.
3. Correlative Conjunctions
- They are used in pairs
- I will drink either tea or juice.
- neither...nor, either...or, though...yet, both...and
