Ethene has double bond because in homologus series carbon has has 4 valance electron which are which are combined with hydrogen.

In it one hydrogen forms covalent bond with one electron of carbon. Hydrogen gives its one electron.

So in ethane there are six atoms of hydrogen and two atoms of carbon. Carbon atoms combine with hydrogene atoms. Both carbon atoms gives his three electron to three atoms of hydrogen and gives one electron to carbon atoms. So they get four electron and fulfills last orbit of carbon.

But ethene has two carbon atoms and two hydrogen atoms. So both carbon gives their two electron to two hydrogen atoms. So there two electrons remain. They gives that electron to another carbon atom. In ethane they give only one electron so they have single bond. But ethene they give two electrons to each other so they have double bond.
