During the diploid stage of the halpodiplontic life cycle of bryophytes spores are produced from spore mother cells by meiosis in the capsule of the diploid sporophytic body and these spores further develop into haploid gametophytic plant body. When haploid antherozoid and egg fuse then embryo is formed that's why bryophytes are called first embryophytes because they were the first group to show embryo formation.

Bryophytes lack vascular tissues so called atracheophytes so they readily absorb nutrients from soil through their body surface and these nutrients reach to every cell of the body by diffusion which is a quite slow process as a result bryophytes are short in heights .

Bryophytes after reproduction produce zygote which further develops into a diploid sporophyte without any formation of seed so called as non spermatophytes.
