archimedes principle is applicable to FLUIDS (gases and liquids are both fluids, as you might be knowing).
we know how it works with liquids. About gases, take a balloon filled with air for example. It 'floats', right? so we say that the density of the balloon is less than that of the atmosphere above it so naturally it floats up.
In simpler words, an object sinks if the force of gravity working on it is greater than the buoyant force of the fluid it is immersed in and vice-versa.
here, the balloon being light floats up(if it is confusing, imagine what happens when you throw a plastic into water, no matter how hard you push it into water, it doesn't sink. The Same is happening here) .
