Do guns prevent violence/crime?

well,guns can prevent violence / crime and the real work of it is to prevent violence /crime and it is done by police but many other people also keep it but ,they should have licence for keeping guns because if they will not have licence for it then this showes that his/her gun is inlegal and can go to the jail,but many bad people also have guns too and they use it for bad purpose , because firing a gun to kill other is a crime and in some what way gun doesn't prevent violence /crime.
