Due to the limited maximum size of a hyenas head, (the neck would not be able to support a much bigger one) a hyenas jaw curves at the back, to leave space for the snout while not sacrificing any bite power. This results in a facial structure that makes hyenas appear to be smiling.

It somewhat seems that they are smiling but they are not.
Even my Doberman seems to smile when exhausted.
