plants need nitrogen not directly .

plants need nitrogen in usable form .

certain bacteria and blue green algae present in the soil fix nitrogen from atmosphere and convert into usable form.

they use this usable form of nitrogen for nitrogen cycle.

this usable nitrogen is then used for the synthesis of plant proteins and other compounds.

Yes. Plants require nitrogen for their growth but, they can't use it directly from air like carbon-dioxide. They need it in a usable form such as fertilizers to use it. Leguminous plants have a bacteria called Rhizobium in their root nodules which change atmospheric nitrogen to liquid nitrogen, which can be used by plants.
