Question:

The two zeroes of a quadratic Polynomial are -4 and -6. Find the sum and the product of the zeroes. What is the value of the coefficient b?

Answer:

Sum of zeroes = -10

Product of zeroes = 24

Value of the coefficient b = 10

Solution:

Given, the two zeroes are -4 and -6.

So,

Sum of zeroes = -4 + (-6)

Sum of zeroes = -10 ...(1)

Similarly,

Product of zeroes = -4 × -6

Product of zeroes = 24 ...(2)

We know, A quadratic polynomial is of the form ax² + bx + c, where a and b are integers and a ≠ 0.

Also,

p(x) = x² - (sum of zeroes)x + (product of zeroes)

⇒ p(x) = x² - (-10)x + (24) { from (1), and (2) }

⇒ p(x) = + 10x + 24

On comparing this Quadratic Polynomial with the standard form of a quadratic polynomial as we discussed above, We get the value of the coefficient b as 10.
