Mothballs. People would put these marble size spheres, often naphthalene, in their closets or pockets. They turned to vapor and kept away moths that would ruin their clothes. (Flying moths laid eggs, moth larve hatched, and fed on the clothing.) Naphthalene did not pass through a liquid phase.
