Sound can travel through Any material medium ..

Example-U can Feel Vibration of sound by keeping ur ear on one end of desk ..u can hear vibration by saying ur friend to bang on another end of desk ..so I can hear sound ....vibrations are passed through molecules of compact desk material...

• yes sound need medium to propagate because sound is produced only when a medium is disturbed... so.. when the particles are disturbed in a medium sound is produced....example tuning fork.....the experiment to show sound doesn't propagate in vacuum is bell jar experiment
