The Department of Physics, being one of the oldest departments of our Institution has a strong lineage related to science education in the state of West Bengal. It also has a robust foundation developed under the pioneering guidance of renowned Jesuits like Fr. Lafont in the middle of nineteenth century along with the contributions over the years from Fr. Verstraeten, Fr. Bonhome and others. Over the years, the department has grown into the present structure with UG, PG sections as well as research activities.
From July 2018, the Department has been in step with the CBCS curriculum in Physics at the undergraduate level. The current faculty members are dedicated towards bringing quality physics education to the students often supplemented with innovative methods of teaching and guided laboratory classes. The department is also one of the few to have supplemented the courses with computation at various levels of study early on.
At the Post Graduate Level, The Physics department offers M.Sc. course in physics. The department also has Ph.D. intakes. In the M.Sc. course two specializations are offered: (1) Astroparticle Physics and (2) Solid State Electronics. The students are exposed to computing tools and numerical programming using Python and Matlab. They also learn the technique of designing experiments through computer interfacing.
