Aim: To show that air expands on heating and contracts on

cooling

Materials required: a balloon, 1 litre water bottle, a bowl of hot

water and a bottle of cold water.
Procedure:

1. Fix a slightly inflated balloon to the mouth of the 1 litre

bottle.

2. Place the bottle with the balloon into the bowl of hot water.

Observe the change.

Answer:

Observation: Observation: When the bottle is placed in hot water, the balloon expands. When the bottle is placed in cold water, it contracts. Inference: This happens because when the bottle is placed in hot water, the air in it becomes warm and expands due to which balloon also expands.

Reason: As the molecules heat and move faster, they are moving apart. So air, like most other substances, expands when heated and contracts when cooled. Because there is more space between the molecules, the air is less dense than the surrounding matter and the hot air floats upward.

Conclusion: The air molecules expands on heating and contracts on cooling. The hot air molecules occupy more space than cold air molecules. The hot air molecules are more heavier than the cold air molecules. The warm air rises up and the cold air remains settled at the bottom
