Wind is generally considered as destructive. People usually curse the wind because along with the wind comes crumbling of roofs, houses, lives etc. However, the poet is asking us to see the positive side of it and consider the wind our friend instead. Wind helps strong fires brighter. So instead of cursing the wind, let us build strong houses, roofs and hearts and so the wind will become our friend.  

The wind stands for the various adversities we face in life. Weak fires resemble weak individuals. They often fall and give up at the slightest adversities they face in life. However, adversities and hurdles make the strong individuals more courageous and become bold to face big difficulties and become successful.

The word means the same as increase /prosper is flourish.
