It must have been very difficult for slaves to join the sangha. According to the rules; a slave needed to take permission from his/her master for joining the sangha. But a slave was never in a position to assert his right.

The rules for Buddhist sanghas were written down in the Vinaya Pitaka. All men could join the sanghas, but children had to take permission from their parents. Also, slaves had to be permitted by their owners and women by their husbands.
