do we feel more heat when we keep one hand above the candle flame than keeping on the side of the candle flame?

Answer:

The hot air is less dense (lighter) than the cooler air around it, so it naturally goes upward, making the area above the flame hotter than the area to the sides of it. On the side of the fire you're only getting the radiant heat from the burn.

It gets warmer because the radiant heat did not have to travel as far. Now hold your hand over the candle and move it as close as you can. ... You can't because of the convection heat rising from the candle in addition to the radiant heat.
