Julius Caesar was certainly an ambitious man. He wanted to rule over Rome as a monarch, bringing an end to the republic. While he never explicitly stated this, his arrogance and elevated sense of self-importance seemed readily apparent enough to make even Brutus, who considered Caesar a close friend, to turn on him and participate in his assassination.

Caesar displays his ambitious nature in several ways. When Mark Anthony attempts to place a crown on his head, he puts forth a very humble facade and rejects it. Additionally, his elevated sense of self is displayed in his tendency to refer to himself in the third person. He also thinks of himself as above the concern of others, completely ignoring the soothsayer and his wife's warnings. Just before he is stabbed to death, he asks "Wilt thou lift up Olympus?" Here, he is comparing himself to a god in the face of his assassins.
