The narrator rightly calls the women in the Ouija Board Party manipulators. They were obviously manipulating i.e. moving the planchette with the fingers to extract the vicious message from the board so that they could gossip about it hungrily. They also tried to manipulate Lavinia's mind and implant the idea in her mind that her husband was having an affair with a 'woman' called Helen.
