The poet, James Kirkup, believes in the essential equality of human beings beneath the superficial divide of geographical boundaries. The poem preaches the theme of universal brotherhood where we are all born and we die in the lap of the same Mother Earth. Human beings all over the world live peacefully when they are not threatened by the menace of warfare. They labour for their harvests and fear starvation in the same manner. The eyes, the hands and the hearts are all alike. Love is the strength that winds us all over and when we hate each other, it is our own self that we betray. When we take up arms to kill each other, Mother Earth is poisoned and her innocence is destroyed. Thus the poet says that the difference between human beings is an artificial construct and we can overcome it by focusing on our basic sameness.
