Do you agree with von Helmont? If nutrients absorbed by plants from soil is equal to the mass of plant / tree what will happen? Think and write your hypothesis.

Answer:

I do not agree with Van Helmont.

Explanation:

Even though Van Helmont was a scientist, I do not agree with his theory that states a mass of a plant is directly proportional to the nutrients that were absorbed by the plant from the soil.

Consider this example: If you are eating 2 Kg of food everyday for 10 days, it will increase your mass proportional to the food you ate in that 10 days and you will gain 20 kg of mass in 10 days. Totally absurd, right?

Plants absorb nutrients from soil and grow. That's not right. The primary source of plant food is photosynthesis. Plants do absorb nutrients from soil that keeps regenerating its nutrients everyday through decaying plants and animals. At the same time, plants do not convert all the nutrients that were absorbed from the soil in to its mass. There will be some wastage anyway. And, what happens to the energy obtained from the Sun and the photosynthesis?
