yes , Gandhi plays a vital role in the nationalist movements.
he protest afainst the british government . he run two main movements with acts
called civil disobedience and non cooperation movements
so he aware indian peoples yo fight gor their right
he helped in the nationalists movements
but the gandhiji's idea is greatly depend upin the idea of satyagray with means peace rather than non violence
he said battle can be win ba peace with each other
but britishers wont hear peace they can only be kick out ba non violence so, we cant say that gandhi plays a role in independence he has a role tho but at minar level coz independence is greatly taken ba freedom fighters with non violence or kranti

Sudarshana2004: is it yes or no
Anonymous: he helped in nationalism but not in independence

Answer :

Yes I do believe it was Gandhiji's leadership that made mass participation in nationalist movement possible as :

  1. Gandhiji was perhaps the greatest social scientist of his time .
  2. He endeared himself to all sections of the Society.
  3. He Studied India deeply and identified the problems of all sections of people.
  4. He was able to connect the poor /the weaker sections of the society to the dream of a free India and how they can participate in the development process .
  5. Pre Independence India exploited during Colonisation, was poor /starving, illiterate, divided on religion - caste- sub caste - region- language - rich-poor - gender basis .
  6. Gandhiji firmly believed that unless issues like fair treatment for Dalits /Untouchability, more opportunities for rural poor in economic activities are addressed, Freedom of our Country will not mean anything to a large section of the society .
  7. So Gandhiji felt that social /economic Justice was more critical than Political freedom .
  8. He was not so much bothered about the timing of Freedom. It was clear from the early 30s that India would get the Freedom.
  9. Gandhiji was more worried about preparing India /its people for an Independent India .
  10. Gandhiji achieved mass participation through means of Satyagraha, Non-Violence, Non-Cooperation, Hunger strike more potent than military weapons .
  11. As mentioned, India would have got Independence any way in due course of time. But the mass participation helped knit India.

Hope it helps!!!
