The cold within' means the lack of warmth within,bom out of selfishness, greed, arrogance, etc. It is because of these negative feelings, 'the cold within', that they do not give up their sticks of wood which could have kept the fire burning and kept them alive.

The six people have cold within as they were not ready to share their logs with each other and the fire was dying. They all were of different class society and due to their ill feelings they had feelings of racial discrimination, class differentiation, etc. and at last died of their ill feelings with logs clutched in their hands.
