Yes, the poem is inspiring indeed. It gives us important points to think about. The points are very basic, but if we follow them, life will definitely be much happier than it has ever been.
Like each normal human being, I too have some shortcomings. This poem has made me think over my shortcomings and try to improve on them. So, the five things, deeds or thoughts that I would want to change, to add to the joys of life would be:
- Not to get irritated at small matters- The line ‘Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind’ made me realise that my reactions are in my control. If I make up my mind not to react aggressively, life will be much more pleasant.
- Appreciate people more often- Each individual around us has some good quality or the other. Even the car cleaner who comes by each morning, has the good habit of being punctual. All I need to do is appreciate people for their goodness, and make them ‘feel like there is something in them’. Everyone enjoys a compliment.
- Focus on positive emotions- I will not be jealous of what another classmate achieves. I will be ‘just as enthusiastic about the success of others’. I will also try to learn more from others and see them as partners to learn from, rather than enemies to dislike.
- Be nice to everyone- I can do this simply by having a cheerful face and ‘give every living person you meet a smile’. It is not difficult to smile, but it spreads great cheer.
- Focus on self-improvement- I will try to be more conscious of my shortcomings and focus on improving them, instead of finding faults in others. It will be a more productive way of utilising time.
