Do you have a pet – a cat or a dog? If not, would you like one? How would you look after it? Are you for or against keeping birds in a cage as pets?

Answer:
Yes, I have cats, dogs and a cockatiel. I have had pets of some form or another since I was a child, can't imagine life without one.
As far as taking care of them, I try to make sure that they have the best medical care I can afford. I spay and neuter as soon as possible, I don't want to ever be responsible for bringing another animal into this world. I research the breed type if known, mine are all rescues so it isn't always easy. I feed the best food I can afford, which is usually grain free for both cats and dogs. Sociization is very important for dogs, most birds. Cats are frequently satisfied with just their people, but some like more attention than just that person. Toys are important for all of them, yes, even birds. They provide exercise and stimulation.
I hate confining birds to cages, that's completely against their natural habitat and instincts. The only cockatiel I have now, a rescue of course, never learned how to fly which to me is so sad! I've also learned to my cost that there is a huge amount of risk to free flight. I lost a dearly loved cockatiel when he managed through ridiculous circumstances to get out. He had done it once before, I got him back. Not so lucky the next time. I still have tremendous guilt over that. But their wings can be clipped so they can't fly easily but still be out of the cage, the best choice. With multiple species I wanted mine to be able to fly out of range for self defense. No matter how well trained your pets are, instinct comes through at times.
If you have the ability, resources to bring an animal or creature into your life, I suggest you do. But go into it eyes wide open, do tons of research, visit shelters, friends and family that have pets. I's so very rewarding but takes a lot of work!
