Do you have to close basement windows if AC is not blowing into them?

A window air conditioner will not work if it is not placed either in a window or another penetration through the structure wall. Air conditioners and other refrigerating machines work by using a fluid to transfer heat from inside the location to be cooled to outside. A window unit does this by absorbing heat indoors through the coils on the front and discharging it outdoors from the coils on the back.
