it is true that lichens can be used as industrial pollution indicators because lichens can't to grow in a polluted area.

Specifically talking about the industrial pollution lichens can't grow in area which is highly polluted by industrial pollutants because industrial pollutants contain a high amount of Sulphur dioxide to which the lichens are susceptible.

Some lichens are highly tolerable to the pollution levels and are found in urban areas but as industrial areas have high amount of Sulphur dioxide, so lichens react with the Sulphur Dioxide present in the environment and release some chemicals which cause the plant of the tree, on which the Lichens grow, to die.
