Women of Victorian age experienced a wide range of fashion. Women wore Crinolines under the skirt, which made the dress appear wider. Crinolines were made from metal rings and were supported by tapes, to bring a beehive appearance.
Later women started to wear a bustle, to expand the fullness or support the drapery at the back. The bustle reduced the weight of the heavy dress at the back.
