couple of answers mention penicillin being discovered on 14 February 1929, but this is not quite right. Alexander Fleming claimed to have discovered the antibiotic on 28 September 1928.
The 14 February 1929 date might be due to confusion with Ernest Duchesne’s independent (though mostly ignored by his contemporaries) discovery of the drug on 14 February 1897. There’s no indication that Fleming was ever aware of Duchesne’s work.
Either way, the discovery of a drug is not the same as the launch of a treatment.
Penicillin’s first clinical use on humans was on 12 February 1941 when Albert Alexander, a policeman, was treated for an life-threatening infection. The drug worked well, but he later died when supplies of it ran out. That’s nearly Valentine’s day, but not quite.
