The family forms the foundation of society in Pakistan and encompasses a wide breadth of relationship. How diversity of family structure has been more limited to adoption, fostering & single parenting.

Explanation:

  • Even today, extended relatives are very important and a vast majority of Pakistanis live in multi-generational houses, with 3, 4 or sometimes 5 generations (including grandparents,  siblings and cousins) living together. Given Pakistan's low socio-economic condition, family ties are essential for people's economic survival.
  • Among the older generation of Pakistanis, casual date is firmly disapproved. There is a lot of paternalism and protectionism about women and their relationships in particular. Some of the younger generation understand relationships more liberally and start dating during their tertiary studies or after them. However, the views of two individuals in public of the opposite gender is likely to draw varying degrees of judgment.
  • There are several weddings planned by Pakistani elders of the town. As the households of the nuclear family become more common in Pakistan's urban areas, now many young adults decide who they marry. However, the parents' absolute permission and acceptance to their choice to partner is always necessary even in these circumstances. Marriages are regarded as the parents' ; they pay for the event itself to a large extent.
  • Providing with future partners is usually a vital factor in the security of the family and honour. Potential partners are typically chosen from the same socio-economic background. Marriages between persons of differing socio-economic levels are rarely approved. Inter-ethnic partnerships are not very common as well, but if all the other social circumstances of families coincide, they are accepted often.
  • A desire for freedom, is the primary reason of young adults breaking apart from their families. They want to live independently, and so the younger generation wants to move away  to avoid intervention & unsolicited opinions. If parents & their adult children cannot agree and disagree on various issues, nuclear families are created.
  • Marriage is also seen as a good means of extending social relations and family members. It is therefore very normal to marry anyone, such as a relative, in the large family. These endogamous marriages are deemed to be consistent, and as the broader family is involved when they fail, family members usually support the couple strongly in order not to make sure they do not. These partnerships also lead to a redistribution of family wealth.
  • However, single parenting in Pakistan, the traditional family structure contains a comparatively "newly accepted checkbox". Talking to the older generation, you normally hear a story where women are in isolation and marrying because they want their children's primary custody. With more financial freedom, child care & safer living arrangements, many parents can leave unsatisfactory marriages and redefine "family".
  • About 100000 young people go through the fostering system every year in Pakistan. People are now open to fostering or adopting children. There are many laws and regulations that ensure adoption/fostering is never misused.
  • In Pakistan, the Muslim-majority nation, polygamy is legally allowed but restricted. The entry into polygamous unions is only legal for men who abide by Islamic faith, with up to four women at a time.
