Answer:

Bees have cultural and environmental importance as pollinators and producers of honey and medicinal products.

Explanation:

Greening the world requires more than soil, water and sun. At least 30% of the world's crops and 90% of all plants require cross-pollination to spread and thrive, and bees are most important pollinators. Unfortunately bee populations are declining here and in other parts of the world.

Five importance of bees to the environment are as follows:

  • Pollination: To germinate, plants need the transfer of pollen from the male part of the flower (anther) to the female part (stigma). As bees move from flower to flower in search of nectar, they leave behind pollen grains on the sticky surface that allow plants to grow and produce food. Bees earn their reputation as busy workers, pollinating billions of plants each year, including millions of crops. In fact, pollinators like bees play a central role in all three foods we eat. Without them, many of the plants we eat would die out.
  • Growth of natural plants: Fruits and vegetables, except those grown on farms, thrive with pollinators. Many wild plant species also depend on pollinators. Bees are responsible for the production of many seeds, nuts, berries and fruits, which are essential food sources for wildlife.
  • Food source: Bees produce honey to feed their family during the cold winter months. Humans have been collecting honey for thousands of years, but we're not the only ones who think of it as a sweet snack. Animals such as birds, raccoons, opossums and insects attack beehives to taste the nutritious honey (and bee larvae). Bees themselves are also part of the food chain. At least 24 species of birds hunt bees, including blackbirds, ruby-throated hummingbirds and starlings. Many spiders and insects, such as dragonflies and mantises, also eat bees.
  • Wild habitats: Bees are known for their elaborate hives, but they also help build homes for millions of other insects and animals. Their role as pollinators is crucial to the growth of tropical forests, savannah forests and temperate broadleaf forests. Many tree species, such as willows and poplars, could not grow without pollinators such as bees. Even your own garden is home to hundreds of tiny creatures, from birds and squirrels to thousands of tiny insects. If the bees disappeared, so would the animals that depend on these plants for their survival.
  • Biodiversity: As pollinators, bees play a role in all areas of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers and other plants that provide food and shelter for creatures large and small. Bees participate in complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow many different species to coexist.
