Do you think Anil's way of paying the narrator was appropriate? why?​

I think that the way Anil paid to the narrator was correct. Anil did not earn well, but he knew how to read and write and was a magazine writer. So, Anil taught Hari Singh how to read and write and in return Hari Singh did the odd jobs such buying groceries, cleaning the house, doing other household chores.

So, I think that Anil's way of paying the narrator was appropriate.
