Answer:In providing a response to your question, I am assuming that by ‘ancient’, you are referring to the vedic practices in architecture that were laid down much later in writing. Although the exact date of this period is unknown, in my opinion this was the pinnacle of architectural practices in the history of Indian architecture. Concepts that were laid out in these orally transmitted texts have been realized in some of the most magnificent temples and cities in the country such as the Konark Temple, Nalanda University and city of Benaras.

I think ancient Indian architecture was wonderfully grounded in a consistent philosophy. It was philosophy that transcended scale and manifested in structural elements that are omnipresent across the building and settlement hierarchies.

Indian architecture might come off initially as something that is not entirely grounded in ‘modern’ theories and practice of design and construction, which is true. However, this comparative standpoint of evaluation needs to be set aside to truly understand and appreciate the beauty of some of the architectural concepts that were used to design ancient settlements.

The essence of architectural design in ancient times was the belief that spirituality place an intrinsic part in creation of a structure. This structure, whether it is a home or a temple, is considered to enhance the connection between the individual and the cosmos. Thus alignment of the structure with respect to the stars, planetary movements in the transcendental realm and with the spatial organization of the city in terms of the street connections and orientations etc becomes very important.

Lastly, I would point out the fact that remarkably, there are some extreme similarities in ancient Indian architectural forms with those of some of the earliest civilizations in the world. This is perhaps because of the reason that looking upward into the night sky is an equally magnificent experience that is beyond any spatial and temporal constraints and this was the primary recreation or measure of inspiration for people of the ancient civilizations.
