There are lots of chemicals released from Mercury. As one of the effluents released from industries, mercury enters water. It gets absorbed by naturally occurring bacteria in water. It is then gets converted to methyl mercury.

Fishes are one of the most popular sea food. If fishes tainted by Mercury are consumed by humans, the mercury acts as neurotoxins. This interferes with humans brain and nervous system.

There is also a disease called Minamata caused by these fishes.

Yes consuming fish with high levels of mercury Hg causes many problems in humans even a small amount of Hg is dangerous for our health. Mercury Hg is present in our Earth's crust and is released into environment by natural disasters like volcanoes. Coal burning and factories are also releasing mercury in our environment which laterly contaminates water of our environment. Fish then ingest mercury like other aquatic animals so it becomes part of our food.
Mercury Hg badly affects our nervous and heredity systems by affecting chromosomes. It can cause memory related issues, double vision and blindness.
