The thought experiment is useful in all aspects of life, not just science. Thought experiments allow us to explore possibilities, ponder scenarios, while applying what we already know about the world in order to give structure and order to our “experiments”.

Thought experiments have their place in science, as you’ve said, with many examples of famous thought experiments as means of thinking about complex problems. Most famously perhaps is Schrodinger’s Cat, designed to highlight the problem of quantum superposition and encourage thought on when a superposition ceases and becomes one or the other. A complex problem, but explained in an accessible way. It is of course, the only way to conduct this “experiment” as the nature of the problem implies it would be impossible to conduct in reality, as the superposition would disappear.

Thought experiments have also famously proved useful in the discipline of Ethics, in the philosophical sense of the discipline rather than that of applied ethics. The Trolley Problem being one example which allows us to internally explore our thoughts morality, without actually having to tie people to a tram track and run them down.

In reality, we all conduct our own thought experiments. We all run through scenarios in our head that haven’t happened yet (or have happened) and think about the outcomes of those scenarios or how those outcomes might change if we alter certain aspects like the things we say. These are the most common and perhaps most useful thought experiments we do. I believe we need thought experiments now more than at any other time in our history. Our attention spans are forever driving us towards a stimulated existence and we spend little time in our heads. Thinking helps regulate our emotions, stimulates our creativity and inspires to be the best versions of ourselves. It is a dying art, one that shouldn’t be allowed to die so fleetingly.

Yes thought experiment is still useful in science in the present time.

Detailed answer

Thought experiment is still useful and will remain like this for the rest of the time as it helps people in all the things in life not just science.

  • It helps us to discover new possiblities, new things,  rethink on old thoughts, all of this can be done while reapplying the things we already known on the new discovereis.
  • This helps us to give order and structure to our experiments.
  • It is extremely usefull in finding information.
  • Newtons cannon is an example of thought experiment.
  • It is defined as the process by which an hypothesis is created for preparing for the consequences it may cause.
