The Himalayas act as an advantage as well disadvanatge for Delhi.
Explanation:
Advantage
- The Himalayas help Delhi, as well as the entire region surrounding Delhi. The Himalayan Mountains shield the whole of the plain from the freezing winds that come from the Siberian plains to the north. The monsoon clouds collides with the the Himalayas and bring rain for Delhi and make Delhi's land fertile.
- If the Himalayas were not there, the land might not have become so fertile and would have been fallow and unproductive. The Himalayan Rivers that originates from it enriches the soil of the entire region which contributes to the fertility of the soil, and also provides adequate irrigation water.
Disadvantage
- One disadvantage for Delhi with the Himalayas aroundis being affected by a condition called"winter inversion"
- During summer air (the lowest portion of the atmosphere) becomes cooler and lighter in the "planetary boundary layer" and rising upwards more quickly . This takes emissions off the surface & mixes them with filtered air of the atmosphere's upper layers in a process termed"'vertical mixing".
- The "planetary boundary layer" becomes thinner over the winter because the colder air near to the surface of the earth becomes thick. Within the warm air the cool air is "trapped" which creates a certain atmosphere, It is regarded as the "winter inversion". Since the vertical air mixture exists only in this layer, there is no adequate space for pollutants emitted to diffuse in the atmosphere.
- In summer, emission reduces when hot air rises upwards freely, making the "planetary boundary layer" denser, and giving sufficient space for the pollutants to disperse adequately. The same occurs in winter afternoons as the sun rises marginally and emission reduces due to increased heat.
- In cities that are near the coast such as Mumbai, the moisture & sea breeze aid in dispersing pollution. However, the "Indo-Gangetic plain" comprising Delhi, Punjab, Bihar, UP, & West Bengal, is like a valley encompassed by the "Himalayas" & other "mountain ranges". Polluted air, hence, settles in this "land-locked valley" & cannot escape because of low wind speeds.
- In major cities like Delhi "high vehicular" & "industrial emissions" together with biomass burning cause increased pollution which gets trapped because of the "valley effect (Himalayas) & winter inversion".
