Ruskin Bond's grandfather was a lover of animals and even had a private zoo at home. Once he saw Toto at the captivity of the Tonga owner he felt the need to take him home. He took good care of Toto and provided him well. But he soon realized that Toto wasn't the type of pet he could keep at home as he was very mischievous and brought a lot of damage to the house by breaking the dishes, tearing clothes and furniture etc.
I think that Grandfather was right in keeping Toto as a pet in the house because he did it purely from the kindness of his heart. But he did the right thing by selling back Toto when he realized that he wasn't a pet they could keep for long.
