Wouldn't you? That's my reason. Wouldn't you kill the animal, if the alternative was to sacrifice your own life to save it? It's a case of might makes "right" ... because we can, we would. The animal would surely make the same choice if it could understand it. It wouldn't be wrong to choose to sacrifice yourself for an animal, as far as I'm concerned, either.
If your question is meant to be about the ethics of research on animals, though, I think it is a red herring. There is no straightforward cause and effect connection between killing animals for science, and saving human lives
