Yes, I believe that Jody is compassionate and conscience-stricken.

  • When Jody's father gets bitten by the rattlesnake he kills a doe and uses its organs such as its heart and liver and draws out the poison that has been bitten into him.
  • This act however damages his conscience as he cannot believe what he had done to a feeble and meek fawn. Even though he knows that the fawn would not be able to survive on its own if it was left alone in the jungle.
  • He is very much conscience stricken by the damage he has done and the fact the is not able to bring the fawn back home. He could give it to a zoo that would care for it but he didn't.
  • What adds to his sense of compassion is when he avoids the route when the carcass of the doe was lying and rotting.
