Answer:

in the story hearts and hands, the author has very skillfully exposed a nice conversation between a lady and a criminal. the glum faced man who was the real marshal, saved Easton from being ashamed infront of Ms. Fairchild who was previously known to Easton. The marshal hid the fact that Mr. Easton was the real criminal rather he posed as if he himself was a criminal and Easton was the marshal. This incident relieved both Mr. Easton and Miss Fairchild. But the chance of knowing the fact is very possible for Miss Fairchild because after the bound travellers went to the smokers' zone of the train, the conversation between two other fellow passengers(Did you ever know an officer to handcuff a prisoner to his right hand?) might have reached to the ears of hers.
