Mr. Gessler was a German shoemaker who settled in London. Mr. Gessler was a
master boot maker who used the best quality leather to make boots. He was very
passionate towards his work. He considered boot making to be an art. The boots that he
made never failed to fit and lasted very long. He was a skilled craft man, honest to his
profession and never compromised on quality. But he lacked competitive business skills
of big firms. Even though he made shoes of high quality, he did not have enough
customers. He had old fashioned ideals and did not change his business style. He did
not advertise. There was no sign upon his shop other than the name of Gessler Brothers
and displayed only a few pairs of boots in the window. He took time in delivering the
boots because he made them alone. These aspects made him lose out in the high
competition amongst the big boot- making firms, which in turn made his poor and
eventually he died of starvation.
